Knorr’s Future 50 Foods Turns 1!

Knorr’s Future 50 Foods Turns 1!

On the 19th of February 2020, Knorr Future 50 Foods celebrated its first year anniversary. Created in partnership with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and nutrition expert Dr Adam Drewnowski – the Future 50 foods report is a collection of diverse plant-based ingredients from around the world known to help boost the nutritional value of our meals whilst helping reduce the environmental impact on our food supply.

Designed to help reduce people’s need to constantly default to the same meals on a daily basis – the report outlines 50 nutritious foods that could help diversify what we eat. Since its launch 12 months ago, Future 50 Foods has been recognised by world-leading organisations, experts, partners and journalists as a positive force for change.

Reinventing Food For Humanity

This ground-breaking report also marked Knorr’s first shift towards Knorr’s new brand purpose to help reinvent food for humanity. An ambitious goal that we hope to achieve by inspiring healthy eating habits and connecting more people to local nutrient-dense Future 50 Foods. Showing how simple healthy alternatives like swapping mince for lentils in your favourite recipes can make all the difference to your well-being.

Along with launching this revolutionary report, Knorr also managed to make amazing strides over the year 2019.

2019 At A Glance

  • Locally, we partnered with chef Mokgadi Itsweng to put together The Plate. A sustainable dining experience based on the Eat Lancet “Planetary Health Plate” to promote plant-based eating and local sourcing.
  • We partnered with the WWF and local farmers in drought-struck regions in South Africa to help increase the cultivation of Future 50 Foods such as fonio and Bambara groundnuts.
  • In 2019, Knorr Future 50 Foods were recognised by the United Nations General Assembly for addressing the United Nations ‘Zero Hunger’ Sustainable Development Goal 2.0.
  • In 2019 we got 350 of the world’s most influential chefs to pledge to showcase Future 50 Foods on their future menus.
  • We got Sodexo to commit to introducing Future 50 Foods ingredients into 5,000 kitchens across workplaces and organisations in the United States, France, Belgium, Netherlands and the UK.
  • In Mexico, Knorr educated more than 900 teachers on how to use Future 50 Foods ingredients and helped teach 50,000 students how to cook more nutritious meals.
  • We got supermarket giant Carrefour to commit to introducing Future 50 food stations with meal ideas and package-free ingredient dispensers into their stores.
  • In Germany, we switched out the beef in Knorr Spaghetti Bolognese mix recipe for lentils (a Future 50 Food) and achieved an amazing 83% drop in CO2 emissions.

This year we’re working to further accelerate our efforts towards fixing the global food system. To achieve this, we’ve set a number of radical new goals to help keep the momentum going!

Our 2020 Commitments:

  • We’ve committed to increasing the number of Knorr products that feature Future 50 Foods by 25% by 2025.
  • We’ve committed to launching 25 new Future 50 Foods-based products across our top 10 countries.
  • To help more consumers make healthy food decisions. We’re experimenting with new retail formats including in-store pick-your-own meals, that will display fresh Future 50 ingredients alongside limited packaging to help consumers make more sustainable decisions.
  • We’re committed to inspiring the next generation, that’s why we’re focusing on improving food education in more schools.
