5 Tips To Help You Eat For Good

Although combatting climate change may feel like a massive task, we can all make small changes to help benefit the planet — starting with how we see and think about food. Being mindful of what we put on our plate is one of the most important things we can do to improve our health and that of our planet. This is what it means to Eat for Good. In honour of Earth Day on 22 April, we’ve come up with five simple tips to help you eat for good.

Tip 1

Small changes to your daily diet can make a big difference. Eat fewer refined grains and instead opt for more whole grains. Whole grains have not been processed, and therefore come complete with all their natural nutritional benefits. Plus, less processing equals less pollution.

Tip 2

Select some of your favourite meals, meals that you cook regularly for lunch or dinner, and ‘veganise’ them. For example, curried chicken can easily become curried chickpeas. You’ll be surprised at how easily you can make your most familiar meals plant based. They’ll taste so similar, in fact, that you may not be able to taste the difference.

Tip 3

While shopping, always be aware of how far the food you want to buy has travelled to get to the shelf. Easy ways to reduce your ‘food miles’ include shopping at your local farmer’s market or choosing in-season produce that is locally sourced and farmed. Not only is this great for the environment but it also helps support local businesses.

Tip 4

Cutting down on the amount of meat and dairy in your diet could also be a good place to start. According to a UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, the consumption of these animal products significantly fuels climate change. "

Tip 5

Where possible, try and have your groceries delivered. Home delivery, much like public transport, helps keep fewer cars on the road. Instead of having 30-odd cars make their way to the supermarket, one delivery driver drives around delivering to everyone. Additionally, it means you’re less likely to impulsively add items into your trolley, thereby helping reduce any food wastage.

What are the Future 50 Foods?

These include 18 vegetables like pumpkin leaves (a leafy vegetable with earthy notes), spinach and kale. There are also 13 cereals, grains or tubers. A diverse range of beans, legumes and sprouts are also featured. Groundnuts which are a plant-based source of protein with a sweet nutty flavour profile have been included too.

There are 4 different nuts and seeds, all great for nutritious snacking. Three mushroom varieties have been added for a boost of beneficial nutrients and a rich flavour. Why were the Future 50 Foods chosen? The aim of Future 50 Foods is to empower people to change the way they eat. By focussing on a plant-based diet, everyone can make a massive positive impact on the environment.

The Future 50 Foods all taste and look different. They span the colours of the rainbow and offer textures and flavours to suit a range of tastes. They contain high nutritional value while lowering the impact that farming has on the environment.
